World Premiere September 17, 2026
Currents of Courage follows seven Idaho men — husbands, fathers, grandfathers — who walked into a river with cancer in their bodies and silence in their hearts. Through Idaho2Fly's free fly-fishing retreats, they found something none of them expected: brotherhood. This is not a film about dying. It's about how men choose to live — and what becomes possible when they finally ask for help.

BEHIND THE CURRENT: The Making of Currents of Courage + A River Runs Through It.
A Wilderness Voice Project event, hosted by the Idaho Film Society in downtown Boise
Every independent film starts the same way: with people who believe in a story enough to chase it, even when they have no idea how to make it. Join us for an intimate evening that pulls back the curtain on that process, as the team behind Currents of Courage shares never-before-seen footage and talks candidly about what it actually took to make their first independent film — the risks, the setbacks, and the moments that made it worth it.
Currents of Courage follows its subjects onto the water, where the river becomes both setting and metaphor for resilience. It's a fitting double feature with A River Runs Through It, Robert Redford's beloved adaptation of Norman Maclean's novel starring Brad Pitt, which turned fly-fishing on a Montana river into one of cinema's most enduring meditations on family, faith, and the pull of moving water. Seeing the two films back to back — one a documentary in the making, the other a classic about to unspool again on the big screen — offers a rare chance to think about how filmmakers, new and established, use rivers to tell human stories.
The evening is designed to be relaxed and social: grab a seat, hear directly from the filmmakers, ask your own questions, and then settle in for the screening. No prior familiarity with either film is required — just a curiosity about how stories get made and a love of a good river tale.
