Director/Editor, Christen Skinner and Cinematographer, Will Bales, on location for Currents of Courage

Wilderness Voice Project produces documentary films for nonprofits, like Idaho2Fly, at no cost — funded entirely by the generosity of individuals, community partners, and grants.

What started as a family’s quiet battle with cancer became the spark for something bigger.

David Nehmer was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer—right around the time his daughter Christen Skinner found out she was pregnant—turning what should have been pure joy into a season of deep anxiety and uncertainty. David’s planned retirement vanished; instead, he clung to his faith and family but found unexpected hope and brotherhood through an Idaho2Fly.org fly fishing retreat. Those days on the river—casting lines, sharing stories, and feeling nature’s steady current—reset his outlook and became a profound source of healing for the entire family.

Christen watched her father transform from fear to resilience. Moved by the power of those experiences, she reached out to her cinematographer friends with a bold idea: Let’s tell this story on film so we can help other men and families.

That collaboration ignited Currents of Courage, our documentary following seven men—including David—battling cancer as they discover tears, triumphs, first casts, and unbreakable brotherhood amid Idaho’s rivers.

From that personal turning point grew Wilderness Voice Project: a mission to amplify nonprofits like Idaho2Fly by delivering professional, high-impact films and content at no cost to them—all funded through personal contributions, sponsorships, crowdfunding, and grants. We ignite conversations, attract funding, and share authentic stories of courage, recovery, and connection in nature’s embrace.

Together with our cinematographers and team, we empower more nonprofits harnessing the outdoors for healing—free of charge.

David Nehmer

When David was diagnosed with Stage 4 prostate cancer, he found unexpected healing and brotherhood through an Idaho2Fly retreat on Idaho's wild rivers. That experience became the spark for this film. A first-time filmmaker and one of the seven men on screen, David serves as Executive Producer and Director of Photography on Currents of Courage. A lifelong photographer, he brings the same eye to the river that he brings to the story — patient, honest, and looking for the light.
